DescriptionEmpire style; paneled front, four lion's claw feet.Label TextMade by Boston's most fashionable furniture maker of the early 19th century, this chest is an early and elegant version of a cooler. The tinlined interior held ice water for chilling bottles. The lock suggests that it was used to store wine, an expensive commodity at the time.
Elizabeth Salisbury (1768-1851), wife of the wealthy Worcester merchant Stephen Salisbury, regularly purchased luxury furnishings—including this item—from Vose.
