Label TextIn contrast to aristocratic portraits in the surrounding gallery, this sitter wears civilian clothes. His nationality and social rank are not readily apparent. Moroni’s innovations in portraiture include his subjects’ frank naturalism and novel ways of engaging the viewer, such as this man’s ruddy cheeks and skeptical expression. As in many of Moroni’s celebrated portraits, the sitter’s precisely rendered features lend him a timeless individualism.ProvenancePercy Moore Turner, London; purchased by Worcester Art Museum, 1912.
