Label TextBefore achieving fame alongside Picasso for his Cubist paintings, Braque was briefly influenced by the Fauves, a group led by Henri Matisse and André Derain that used solid outlines and unusual colors in reaction to Impressionism. Olive Trees dates from the time Braque spent visiting the south of France, in Mediterranean villages near the city of Marseilles. The high-intensity pinks and reds of the loosely formed trees create a landscape charged with heat and emotion.
