Over a thirty-year period he documented the city of Paris by photographing its interiors, exteriors and inhabitants. Expanding his subject matter to the city's environs, he photographed the parks and chateaux on the outskirts of Paris. This image of the famous gardens at Versailles is crisp and sharply focused. It stands in marked contrast to the soft-focus, narrative photographs that were popular during this period. Using a view camera and the old fashioned albumen process, the artist created a modernist style with materials and methods that had fallen out of vogueProvenancePurchase from Lee Gallery, Winchester, MA
