Label TextThis print and the accompanying A Woman Lighting A Lantern, also in this exhibition, illustrate the Meiji feminine ideal. Girls' high schools in this period, unlike those for boys, were not academically rigorous, their role was to develop in young women refined taste and gentle and modest character. The Meiji government exhorted women to contribute to the nation through hard work, frugality, efficient management, and family duties. They were prohibited from having a political voice; this exclusion was justified by women's role in the home and family.ProvenanceHuys den esch, A.H.M. van Doesburg, Kerstraat 6, 6669 DD Dodewaard, The NetherlandsOn View
