Label TextLewis cat. 343. An assistant in the workshop of George Baxter, Von Humboldt used the studio's patented technique combining wood-engraved blocks printed in many colors with an aquatint tone plate for fine details. This prospect of an Andean peak was the frontispiece of "Views of Nature: of Contemplations of the Sublime Phenomena of Creation", and exemplifies the shop's later concentration on book illustration. When Baxter found that no profitable market existed for his meticulous, expensive single-leaf prints, his shop turned to illustrations. The key plate in this print is less carefully worked, fewer color blocks were used, and the registration is comparatively intact.ProvenanceMrs. Kingsmill Marrs, Boston, MA
