Label TextFélix Bracquemond is credited as a powerful force behind etching’s revival in nineteenth-century France. His wife Marie, represented here, was a well-received Impressionist artist in her own right. A student of famed painter Jean-Auguste-David Ingres, she wrote: “[Ingres] doubted the courage and perseverance of a woman in the field of painting. He would assign to them only the painting of flowers, of fruits, of still lifes, portraits and genre scenes.” Marie Bracquemond quit her promising artistic career when it caused tension in her marriage.ProvenanceLouis W.
