Label TextMucha’s female subjects broadly range from maternal nurturers to refined libertines—like the woman seen here who is sophisticated enough to roll her own cigarette. Mucha’s art astutely blends a modern consumer activity with otherworldly decorative elements, like this woman’s abundant brunette tendrils and classically draped dress. The company’s signature logo of the letters J and B intertwined by a diamond, forms the brooch on the woman’s dress and produces an endlessly repeating decorative element in the background. The goddess as spokesperson signaled the “Mucha Style,” a term used interchangeably with Art Nouveau in the 1890s.On View
