Label TextBorn in Paris, Taunay began his artistic education there as a teenager. Among other leading French artists active at the time, he studied with Nicolas-Guy Brenet, whose work is also in this gallery. Taunay specialized in landscape. This scene was likely painted after his three-year sojourn in Rome, where he studied at the French Academy there: the golden light and strong modeling of the figures have an Italianate quality.ProvenancePrivate collection, Switzerland; Charles Roelofz, Amsterdam, 1984; Mr. & Mrs. Robert W.
