Label TextAndrea Brustolon, a native of Belluno, studied first with his father in his home town and then in Venice with the Genoese Filippo Parodi.
This piece, which shows Brustolon's strength as figural sculptor, illustrates the miracle by which the aged Saint Peter, imprisoned by Herod, was freed by an angel. It is a highly pictorial piece of sculpture; although intricately carved in the round, it is clearly intended to be viewed from one main vantage point, so that its composition works in a way similar to that of a two-dimensional painting. The strong play of diagonals, the quality of arrested movement, and the almost theatrical drama of the piece are all characteristic of the Baroque.
