Label TextThe reign of shah Jahan (r.1627-58) the second son of Jahangir (r. 1605-27) marked the apogee of Mughal achievement. His wealth was prodigious and despite an enormous building program that included the Taj Mahal, he maintained a court whose magnificence revealed his obsession with imperial splendor. During his reign, court portraiture hardened into a magnificent but stiffly formal style. This depiction of shah Jahan like most of his protraits, reveals a rather stiff and haughty individual.ProvenanceCharles Cohn/Stuart Anderson, Worcester MA
