Label TextIn the 1870s, Tissot settled in London and established a reputation for painting social events and well-to-do people. This work depicts a self-consciously modern gentleman of wealth, refinement, and sophistication. By holding his watch closely he indicates that the train is running late, yet he remains composed and calm.
