Label TextAs a painter and photographer, Sheeler is considered a pioneer of American Modernism. He coined the term “Precisionism” to describe his style and subject: the works of modern man. In 1928, the Ford Motor Company commissioned a series of photographs of their manufacturing plants from the artist. When he visited the city again in 1935, he was inspired to return to grand-scale industrial landscape. The relationship of this study to his larger oil painting reveals how he used his photographs as preparatory sketches.ProvenanceRaphael Soyer, New York; (The New Gallery, New York); William H. Lane, Leominster, MA
