Label TextTworkov was both a poetic and intellectual artist. This sketchbook sheet reflects his gradual move toward Abstract Expressionism. “The essence of our new art,” he wrote in his journal in 1959, “is that instead of being a representation of an experience, the painting is an experience itself.” Soon he abandoned representation altogether. Then, a decade later Tworkov consciously abandoned gestural painting in favor of a more intellectual framework, becoming a pioneer of Minimalism.ProvenanceMr. Ralph Rose, Worcester, MA
