Label TextEdith Perley Kinnicutt (1856-1923) was a prominent citizen of Worcester and for many years a leader in the women's suffrage movement. She was an active member and president of The Girls' Club and the Worcester Civic League, and a generous benefactor to many charitable causes for women. In 1878 she married Lincoln N. Kinnicutt (1849-1921) of Worcester, a banker and broker in the city. Their son, Dr. Roger Kinnicutt, was President of the Worcester Art Museum from 1952-1960. A native of Salem, Massachusetts, Frank W. Benson was one of the most influential artists and teachers in Boston at the turn of the century. He was a founding member in 1898 of The Ten American Painters, a group of New York and Boston Impressionists. Also, he taught for almost thirty years (1889-1917) at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he influenced a younger generation of painters. This work is a fine example of Benson's portrait style that combines his interest in Impressionism in the broad brushwork with an elegant, refined composition reminiscent of his early academic training.
