DescriptionPlate Two from the series The Trilogy of Love.Label TextThese three lithographs are based on a complete set of tarot cards Salvador Dalí made for his wife Gala, who often did readings as entertainment when guests visited. Tarot cards are divided into the major and minor arcana, representing more or less significant life events. The Prince of Love (left) represents the tarot card of The Hanged Man, Love’s Promise (center) is based on his card for Temperance, and The Eternity of Love (right) is the same image Dalí used for the arcana card of The Tower. The meanings of tarot cards change if the image on a card falls upright or upside-down. In this way the prints can be engaged with right-side-up or turned 180 degrees. Here The Prince of Love is intentionally hung on-end to emphasize the fluid nature of these works. ProvenanceWeyman Lundquist, Hanover, NH
