Label TextAbraham Bloemaert’s pupil in Amsterdam, Bolswaert seems to have learned printmaking from his sons. This is one from a series representing fifty hermit saints, Sylva Anachoretica Ægypti Et Palæstinæ. Commissioned by the Rector of the Antwerp Jesuit College, Heribert van Rosweijde, the project reflects Bloemaert’s devout Catholicism. Also a Catholic, Bolswaert later built a successful career in Antwerp during the Counter-Reformation, when he and his brother Schelte engraved the designs of Pieter Paul Rubens.ProvenanceMrs. Kingsmill Marrs, Boston, MAOn View
