Label TextLarge banquet still-lifes, like this one, became popular in the Netherlands around the middle of the seventeenth century when the Dutch enjoyed great prosperity as the mercantile leaders of Europe. These paintings reflect the need of this society for ostentation. They typically show a bounty of rich food and drink among ornate objects of silver, glass, and other precious materials. Frequently the artist will include a vanitas symbol, like the watch here, to refer to the transience of such earthly pleasures.ProvenanceMajor J. A. Coats; The Property of the late Major J. A.
