DescriptionProbably part of shaffron, protective headgear for a horse with images of Minerva, a Victory and Mars
Label TextFor Roman military parades and tournaments, horses were adorned with elaborate metal armor. This bronze plaque was attached by hinges to two other plaques forming an eye and cheek guard for the horse (see drawing). Warlike Minerva shields the eye of the horse and Mars, god of war, stands below at attention.
