DescriptionFrom Cyclades Islands; Nude standing female figure--Dokathismata type. Head tilted back, spinal groove in back. Worked in the round.
Label TextThis highly abstracted female figure is characteristic of sculpture created during the third millennium BCE on the Cyclades, a group of islands in the Aegean Sea. The spade-shaped head, cylindrical neck, and broadly squared shoulders exemplify the bold geometric style of Cycladic artists. In addition to incised features, like the pubic triangle and folded arms, such figures were often enlivened by painted details that have worn off over time. Since the pointed toes make it impossible for this figure to stand up on its own, it was probably made to lie down, an indication that it may have been included in a burial.ProvenanceCharles Lucien Morley, New York, NY
