Label TextG aston Duchamp took the name of one of France’s most famous satirists, Jacques Villon, to differentiate himself from his talented artistic siblings: Marcel, Raymond, and Suzanne Duchamp. This fan-shaped print was commissioned by the French comedian and playwright Henri Monnier as the invitation for a party he hosted at The Moulin Rouge nightclub in Paris. Monnier attained fame for his boorish character Monsieur Prudhomme, described by Honoré de Balzac as “the classic example of middle-class Paris.” The portly Monnier—in the character of Prudhomme—can be seen in the background on the left.
