Label TextRealizing that African Americans might never achieve full citizenship in the United States, in the nineteenth century many free citizens advocated for the establishment of a free black colony in Western Africa. This life membership certificate belonged to a supporter of the American Colonization Society, formed in 1817 to advance these colonization efforts. Society members had varying interests: some hoped colonization would eradicate slavery entirely, while others believed that the removal of free blacks would eliminate potential threats to slavery itself. On View
