DescriptionGold and enamel. Used as a charm. Side opposite inscription has the feet of Mohammed.
Label TextThe pendant belonged to a devotee of Krishna. Surrounded by a bird and flower motif, the inscription in Devnagari reads Shri Nathji. Shri Nathji is an aspect of Krishna depicted in an image worshipped at Nathdwara near Udaipur (Rajasthan) by Vallabhacharya (1479-1531). It shows Krishna lifting the Govardhana hill to subdue Indra who had sent an incessant downpour of rain to punish the cow-herders of Gokul because of their devotion to Krishna. The image is believed to be a manifestation of the deity himself and is lavished with clothing and ornamentation. Krishna's footprints are depicted on the other side of this pendant. The hanging pearl found on similar pendants is missing. Notes:Evoking Rasa in Luminous Visions: Indian Art from the Chester and Davida Herwitz Collection ProvenanceMrs. Kingsmill Marrs, Boston, MA
