DescriptionAM/2/M-P Inscribed in pen and brown ink, l.r., "To Humann/A.H. Maurer 1/2."Label TextThe son of a leading Currier and Ives draftsman, Maurer worked successfully in a naturalistic style until moving to Paris in 1901. Joining the circle of Gertrude and Leo Stein, he met artists who were experimenting with avant-garde styles from analytical Cubism to Fauvism. He synthesized their influences in a unique personal style, apparent in this oil sketch. This work was made soon after World War I when Maurer was forced to return to New York.ProvenanceMr. and Mrs. O. Victor Humann, Worcester, MA
