Label TextA stonecutter and sculptor, Floris became best known for creating royal tombs in northern Europe. He visited Rome, then returned to Antwerp with a Renaissance and Mannerist style that he used for the sculptural ornament of Antwerp Town Hall and other projects. Engravings published by Hieronymus Cock disseminated his designs, like this Renaissance grotesque, throughout the northern Netherlands. His younger brother, Frans, later traveled to Italy and came back to his hometown to become the leading Flemish painter of the Romanist generation.ProvenanceJames Bergquist, Boston, MA
