DescriptionTwo Girls, Mending NetsLabel TextA celebrated and prolific engraver early in his career, Homer produced these prints during a period in the late 1880s when he was experimenting with large-scale etchings, many based on subjects and themes first addressed in his Cullercoats works. A Voice from the Cliffs is clearly based on one of Homer’s favorite paintings, Hark! The Lark, yet he made some noticeable changes to the composition. In the etching, Homer tightened the focus on the three women, cropping them at the knee, and introduced a more distinctive landscape setting—a series of high cliffs surrounding a small bay in which a sailboat is visible at left. This added context makes the nature of the women’s work, as well as the distant call, more literal and less lyrical than in Hark!.ProvenanceMrs. Kingsmill Marrs, Boston, MA
