Label TextLe Gray studied painting at the École des Beaux-Arts with Paul Delaroche, who encouraged the use of photography. He developed dry waxed-paper negatives that remained sensitive for two weeks, and were viable for nearly a week after exposure. In 1857, Le Gray won the prestigious Imperial commission to photograph the military training camp at Châlons-sur-Marne, where he worked for a month. This is one of his photographs of the famous Algerian infantrymen recruited from the Zouaoua tribe of Berbers living in the Jurjura mountains.ProvenanceLee Gallery, Winchester, MAOn View
