Label TextRenowned as a painter and printmaker, Picasso was also a prolific
ceramicist, known to have designed at least 633 different ceramic forms
between 1947 and his death in 1973. He created utilitarian homeware
objects including plates, bowls, pitchers, jugs, and vases. Picasso
experimented with humanoid handle forms, engraving into the clay
before it was fired, and using various paint glazes on the surface. He
would often produce these ceramics in editions or multiples, making his
art more accessible to a wider range of audiences. Here you can see a
variety of functional and motif forms, including one of his celebrated
female pitchers and a visage or face plate.
