Label TextThis 10-part serial portrait was made while Los Angeles-based filmmaker and photographer Sharon Lockhart accompanied Brazilian anthropologists on a research trip there. Lockhart’s exacting title and framework of nearly identical pose and composition suggest scientific examination and classification of both Maria and the fruits. But the resulting cumulative image is a collaborative and highly choreographed social portrait in which Lockhart’s documentation and Maria’s self-expression are inseparable. While the fruits may be exotic looking to our eyes, Maria’s sensuous yet middle-aged physique (bearing the traces of manual labor) and her self-assured manner contradict the conventional idea of the naïve “island beauty” (a la Gauguin) who is merely the object of our gaze.
