Label TextOn a New York street, a graffiti-riddled wall acts as a backdrop that threatens to engulf the skater whose world is defined by its scrawls. Using graffiti as a form of communication, artists express anger and frustration at individual, social, or political slights, finding safety in anonymity. Placed squarely in the public domain, often in poor neighborhoods, graffiti also provides a way for individuals or groups to relay turf boundaries. It thus reinforces the importance of claimed space. Elusive spaces award higher status to the artists, so relatively easy to reach spaces like these tunnel walls do not provide as much acclaim.ProvenancePurchased from the artist
