Laxma Goud (b. 1940) Three Trees and a Woman 1978 Graphite on gray wove paper Gift from the Chester and Davida Herwitz Collection, 2002.411 Laxma Goud's detailed drawings are highly prized by collectors. This representative work depicts a village woman who, while alone, forms an integral part of the natural world around her. Using fine line-work Goud fuses her body with lush, inter-grown trees. A few branches suggest the merging of a sleeping monkey with the vegetation. Goud emphasizes the size and positions of the woman's hand and feet: he believes that a person's identity is revealed when looking at their hands and feet. Her married status is evident from the bindi on her forehead and her jewelry: finger-, nose-, ear and toe-rings as well as bracelets. Most importantly she wears a marriage
