Label Text2005-02-26: Maqbool Fida Husain (b. 1915) Bamboo and Dragonfly Black felt tip pen, transparent and opaque watercolor on cream wove paper Gift from the Chester and Davida Herwitz Collection, 2002.458 Some of Husain's paintings are whimsical and reveal his ability to capture a sense of interaction between people and their environments by highlighting expressive individual limbs, hands and feet. In this painting Husain depicts the momentary delight of a hand vainly chasing a dragonfly through a bamboo thicket. Overlapping rectangles of color suggest an atmosphere of sunlight and shade in the thicket, and the bamboo leaves harmonize with the shape of the dragonfly's wings, increasing the impression of flight.
