Ramanujam (1941-73) Deity 1960s Opaque watercolor on paperboard Gift from the Chester and Davida Herwitz Collection, 2002.481 Ramanujam's depiction of a deity, with top-knot, pierced earlobes and large eyes, may have been inspired by folk paintings and his teacher Paniker's interest in the geometric images inspired by Tantric symbolism. However, the image is particularly charming since the choice of colors is personal rather than traditional, and the image is not quite symmetrical. In 1993, when asked about Ramanujam, the artist Redeppa M. Naidu who also resided at the Cholamandal Artists' Village said, "You know, he is a very interesting example.
