DescriptionYoshitoshi produced this early treatment in collaboration with Wakai Shuntei, who supplied the background, while Yoshitoshi provided the figural elements. Little is known about Shuntei, though he seems to have specialized in the genre of flower-and-bird pictures (kachō-ga). The success of The Flute Player painting and the 1883 triptych of the same subject led to the reissue of this print in 1884 with partially new blocks and a softer color scheme, and Shuntei’s signatures removed. By the 1880s this story had become something of a signature subject for Yoshitoshi.
