Label TextCoornhert’s senior assistant, Philips Galle opened his own Antwerp printshop in 1570. He specialized in Romanist style engravings of mythological and religious subjects, by designers like Anthonie Blocklandt, Frans Floris, and Maerten de Vos. Livy recorded the legend of Mucius from early history of Rome. He was a general, captured by the Etruscan commander Porsenna. Threatened with torture, Mucius demonstrated his mettle by holding his right hand in the fire. He was released for this brave demonstration, and known thereafter as Scaevola, “the left handed.”ProvenanceJan Johnson, Montreal, Canada
