Hasegawa ranks among the most original and talented woodblock print artists active today. The famous woodblock artist Saito Kiyoshi (1907-97) taught Hasegawa the process of using only one carved block. Being raised in a family of lacquer craftsmen is said to have influenced both his decision to practice such a painstaking printing technique and to use such rich, lustrous colors. Hasegawa first strengthens the back of hand-made torinoko paper by rubbing it with a solution of kakishibu (persimmon tannin) which seeps through to the front of the sheet.
