Label TextConfetti litters a Boston street as several men congregate behind a resting dragon’s head in the aftermath of a parade. The Chinese New Year parade as a public celebration originated in San Francisco in 1953. Its promotion helped fight Cold War communism by advertising the ethnic diversity of America as an ideal of democracy. The public celebration of a foreign heritage only supported the concept of America as a welcoming refuge for all. However, the two men wearing Western suits demonstrate that they have assimilated into American culture, and that the traditional Chinese clothing only helps to fulfill spectator imagination.ProvenanceGift of Hansi Durlach
