Label TextCharles LeDray’s Untitled (Sailor) acknowledges the gap between a public and private persona that the military uniform traditionally has represented. In contrast to the conventional heroic warrior, LeDray’s diminutive “sailor” dispense with the actual body. Handcrafted in its entirety (LeDray was taught to sew at age four by his mother), this “unknown soldier” is a tender hybrid of child and man that is endowed with a combined sweetness and emotional weight.ProvenanceChristie's sale 1269 lot 78, from collection of Kenneth Freed, Boston
