Label TextEdward Sherriff Curtis is best known for his documentation of the vanishing Native American nations across the western United States at the turn of the nineteenth to twentieth century. Appealing to the expectations of his mostly urban audience, Curtis sometimes romanticized his depictions of Native Americans by partially staging his photographs. To this end, Curtis presented his subjects adorned in traditional garments and surrounded by indigenous objects, removing machine-made items like clocks. Curtis preferred a gold-toned printing process for final prints, using cyanotypes as a means of proofing his negatives.ProvenanceCharles Isaacs Photographs
