Label TextThe humped, white bull Nandi (lit. 'rejoicing,' 'the one who grants joy') is Shiva's vehicle. It is garlanded and decorated with bells and is depicted crouching. Nandi symbolizes moral and religious duty and permanent inner strength; it also represents fertility and virility. In temples devotees would often see a sculpture of Nandi before they saw the image of Shiva. Only those who have conquered desire and achieved self-knowledge can ride the white bull like Shiva.ProvenanceDr. Alfred Yankuer, Amherst, MAOn View
