Label TextDisplays of brutality typically associated with boxing are dislodged from their original context by Suara Welitoff, whose abstracted footage of boxers in the ring restages their savage blows and staggering steps as anonymous and silent. For A Million Sunsets, Welitoff altered footage from original documentary films of Joe Lewis (including his first-round knockout of German, Max Schmeling, in 1938). Stripped of the usual accompanying sounds, unnaturally colorized, and its focus destabilized, Welitoff’s short repeated action transforms specific realities into a hypnotic, highly choreographed dance of color and form across the screen.
