Label TextLike other ceramicists of his time Kotaki Etsuro was first influenced by the Mashiko pottery of Hamada Shoji (1894-1978). In 1965 he gained the opportunity to study with Tamura Koichi (1918-87) who was designated a National Treasure in 1986.
Kotaki, like the potter Kamoda Shoji (1933-83), helped transform the aesthetic appreciation of modern Japanese ceramics by creating stoneware vessels that are varied and innovative in form, line, balance, glazing and decoration. This large flared bowl with gently sloping sides and swirling lines is a fine example of Kotaki’s work.ProvenanceDr. Robert and Ann Walzer, West Redding, CTOn View
