Label TextBaumann traced the image from his gouache sketch to a key block, which carried most of the design's linear information. After carving this image he offset its design onto five other woodblocks, one for each color. The artist always used basswood, or linden, a soft material with little grain. The blocks are all the same size, so that they could be mounted in the same position in the printing press and assure proper registration of the superimposed colors. Baumann printed his key block last, here in black, to yield a proof from the final edition, hanging on the right.ProvenanceThe artist; Ann Baumann, Santa Rosa, CA
