Label TextDuring the 1970s, Prince (born 1949) gained recognition for appropriating images by photographing other photographs. Often using magazines as source material, Prince’s finished work accentuated the unintended sociological implications of iconic advertisements, particularly in terms of gender and sexuality.
One of the most famous by Prince was the appropriated image of a Marlboro cigarette advertisement by Sam Abell, and its mythologized image of a handsome, rugged, individualist cowboy figure. Prince’s “image-mining” galvanized controversy in the areas of fair use and copyright.
