DescriptionPublished in FrankfurtLabel TextThe son of an affluent diamond merchant, Hoefnagel studied with Hans Bol. As a miniaturist specializing in flora and fauna, and became court painter to the Elector of Bavaria, then to the Holy Roman Emperor. Hoefnagel taught his son Jacob to paint and engrave, and they collaborated on printed books for scientists and artists. This plate comes from the series “Examples and Studies by [My] Father Georg Hoefnagel,” published in Frankfurt in 1592.
