Label TextThe lawyer Ivan Gratianovitch Dombrowsky served in the White Russian army during World War I. Later the Bolsheviks imprisoned him as a counterrevolutionary. In 1925 he immigrated to the United States and became John Graham. His work and ideas, expressed in his book "System and Dialectics in Art" (1937) influenced Arshile Gorky, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and many other painters in the 1940s.
