Label Text2003-12-11: PANELS FROM THE WINGS OF A TRIPTYCH Paolo Veneziano Italian, Venetian School, active 1324(?)-1358 Tempera on panels Museum purchase, 1927.19.1-7 Little is definitely known of the Venetian painter Paolo Veneziano, although a few signed and dated pictures exist. He collaborated with several other artists, including his sons Luca and Giovanni. As a Venetian, he was in a position to receive the Byzantine artistic tradition of the city, which is reflected in the gem-like precision of his painting. The influence of Northern Gothic art was also felt quickly in Venice, and Paolo shows his knowledge of French manuscript painting and the other refined, courtly arts of the North in his elegant line and subtly decorative use of color against gold.
