Label TextAt age twenty-one, Goltzius married an older widow, and was able to open his own printshop in Haarlem. His young stepson, Jacob Matham, became his first assistant. Jacques de la Faille had commanded the ninth division of the Antwerp People’s Militia. Alessandro Farnese’s Spanish army forced him to flee the city, which soon fell to the invaders. De la Faille took his family to Haarlem, and worked in his father’s shipping firm. He had Goltzius engrave this, and a matching portrait of his wife, to demonstrate their continuing wealth and political stature.
