Label TextActivist and photojournalist Danny Lyon was in the midst of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement when he caught this entrance to a café in Jim Crow-era Selma, Alabama. While legal segregation based on race remained strong in the mid-century American South, physical force also controlled the access people of color had to many spaces and services. Andy Warhol’s monochrome screen-print reproduces a press photo revealing how violence and intimidation worked to undermine the status of African Americans in the public sphere.ProvenanceLee Gallery, Winchester, MA
