Label TextA painter and stained-glass decorator, Vellert was prominent in Antwerp during the early sixteenth century. In 1526 he was dean of the Guild of Saint Luke, or artists’ guild. He only made about twenty prints, but was a master engraver. Vellert’s delicate plates combine the virtuosity of German engraving with a knowledge of Italian Renaissance ideas and forms. This suggests an association with fellow guildsman Jan Gossaert, a painter who visited Rome in 1508-09. This is one from a loose series of prints representing the miracles of Christ.ProvenanceR.M.
